Our Learning Approach

Play-based learning is an effective learning approach in our curriculum, especially for our young learners in Nursery classes, given their innate curiosity and ability to learn effectively through exploration, self-discovery, experimentation and imagination. We engage our children in both indoor and outdoor play for effective and fun hands-on learning through concrete experiences, play and field trips. Interactive thematic learning corners are designed to facilitate active learning through play.

At the Kindergartener levels, our active learners participate in inquiry-based learning and guided project work integrated across multiple learning domains. They will answer open-ended and thought-provoking questions and participate in the process of inquiry, where they investigate, explore and formulate creative solutions to build their foundation for higher-order thinking skills. They will present their works to their peers and teachers to develop their confidence and communication skills.

Our guiding principle is always to make children’s learning effective and enjoyable so that they learn joyfully and confidently, gaining a head start in school readiness and lifelong learning. We are passionate in enabling every child to reach his/ her potential and to be future-ready, with the mindsets of an Explorer, an Innovator and an Entrepreneur.

Our Space Buds is a one-of-a-kind education programme designed to introduce our K2 children to all things Space and excite them about the final frontier through a purposeful and intentional approach. It is designed to fire up the young sparks to build lifelong interest and foundational knowledge in Space and STEM at an early age. We bring purposeful fun and passion together to create an environment that educates, spurs creativity, and ignites their passion for learning and appreciation for innovation.

The Space Buds Programme is conducted in two phases for our K2 cohort. Phase One comprises Space lessons taught by industry experts from Space Faculty (an organization with the mission to create the next generation of global tech leaders starting with Space) in April, in conjunction with the United Nations (U.N.). International Day of Human Space Flight on 12 April annually.

Phase Two of the Space Buds Programme is conducted in early October, when our family of Methodist preschools joins the world in celebrating World Space Week (4-10 Oct) - an international celebration of the contribution of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition. Our preschools engage children with a kaleidoscope of exciting lessons and activities designed to spark our little explorers' curiosity, imagination, interest, exploration and learning of Space. From our youngest child in Nursery to our K2 children, the myriad of hands-on and fun activities that are specially curated and prepared to engage our young minds promise to be a blast! The highlight of World Space Week for our graduating batch of K2 students will be the exclusive opportunity for them to participate in a live virtual interactive learning session with a NASA Astronaut to hear the first-hand sharing of their experience as an Astronaut. Best of all, our young minds' burning questions get answered during the interactive Q&A session during the virtual meet-up.

The Signature Space Buds Programme is a definite highlight for every Methodist preschooler before they graduate. We are confident the unique learning experience will go a long way to fueling children's passion and curiosity as lifelong learners and helping them become future-ready.

Signature MPS Children Designathon

Preschoolers today are growing up amidst pressing environmental challenges like climate change and pollution. We believe that teaching preschoolers about climate change is crucial because it instills early awareness and understanding of environmental issues, fostering a crucial sense of responsibility and stewardship for the environment from a young age. Early education also empowers children to become informed advocates and changemakers for environmental protection and sustainability.

Our Signature MPS CHILDREN DESIGNATHON is developed in partnership with Amsterdam-based Designathon Works. It combines elements of play in a structured process of hands-on learning for the K2 cohort in our family Methodist preschools. This first-in-Singapore preschool Designathon is a curriculum programme specially designed to inspire our preschoolers to discover and learn about climate change and environment sustainability based on three themes - Plastic, Robots and Water.

The MPS Children Designathon draws on the boundless imagination and creativity of young K2s to dream big, think boldly, critically and out-of-box as innovative changemakers to ideate and build solutions for a better future! The programme also helps children develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills and creativity, while honing their social and communication skills through teamwork. The opportunity for each project group to present their sketch and built-up prototype to an audience also enhances children’s presentation skills and self-confidence.

We see our children as Changemakers and hope they will grow up to be engaged citizens, future activists, scientists, and inventors who can take action for a better world they want to live in.

Signature Methodist Music Odyssey Programme

The Methodist Music Odyssey programme is a signature programme developed with the Methodist School of Music and taught in Methodist preschools to provide every child with access to high-quality music experiences in their preschool education.

Research has shown that exposure to music from early childhood onwards helps children speak more clearly, develop a more extensive vocabulary, and strengthen social and emotional skills. Music education has proven benefits of accelerating the development of language and numeracy skills, enhancing memory, inspiring creativity and building self-confidence. It can also energize, build rapport, set the tone for the day, stimulate the mind and facilitate fun and inspiration.

Children will start their early music journey learning to enjoy and appreciate music through music & movement, singing and music making. At K1 and K2 levels, the programme aims to develop the whole child with a musical and spiritual emphasis. The rich and unique music curriculum engages the whole Methodist approach to lay the foundation for godly character through holistic music education.

The MMO programme adopts the principles of the Kodály concept of holistic music education across six domains:

Explorers Programme

The BB Explorers Programme is an integrated preschool values-in-action community development programme by the Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade Singapore. It develops practical life-skills and soft skills as well as character development based on biblical values. Through life lessons or stories, hands-on activities and fun games, children learn essential life skills while building important character values and attributes. Motor skills, social skills and creativity are enhanced through the engaging activities too. The little explorers embark on a ‘4 Dimensional Journey’ through ‘4 Discovery Islands’ with the objectives of discovering the world around them, their place in the world, the needs of others and to discover themselves through the comprehensive Explorers Programme.

Innovative Education Technology

Creative integration of innovative education technology within our curriculum enhances both teaching and learning processes. The use of smart interactive technology effectively stimulates, engages and challenges our preschoolers to maximise the effectiveness and fun of learning. Our students’ digital competence is also developed in the process as we future-proof them to learn, work and live in an increasingly technology-dependent society into the 21st century.

 Our Core Curriculum

Our Methodist preschools offer a uniquely curated curriculum that extends beyond the key learning areas and learning goals stipulated within the Ministry of Education’s Nurturing Early Learners (NEL) Curriculum Framework:

  • Values, Social and Emotional Development and Learning Dispositions

  • Aesthetics and Creative Expression

  • Discovery of the World

  • Language and Literacy

  • Health, Safety and Motor Skills Development

  • Numeracy

We ensure a comprehensive curriculum that supports the holistic development of children during their early learning and development that aligns with the NEL Framework on the beliefs and teaching principles on how children learn and develop and what constitutes quality preschool education to prepare children to maximize their potential for a bright future ahead.

We adopt a STEM-based curriculum. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, is an educational discipline that aims to spark an interest and lifelong love of sciences for students to develop a strong foundation on the competencies needed to prepare them for future-readiness.

Values, Social and
Emotional Development and
Learning Dispositions

Values, Social and Emotional Development and Learning Dispositions

John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, believes that ‘the heart of education is the education of the heart’.

At Methodist preschools, we take great responsibility in every child's character development as an integral part of our curriculum. Our unique character development programme focuses on our core values of Love, Respect, Courage, Thankfulness and Passion for Learning. Children participate actively in meaningful values-in-action projects and community-based initiatives that shape their character and instil lifelong values, laying a strong foundation for their future success.

Aesthetics and Creative Expression

Aesthetics and Creative Expression (Music & Art)

Our proprietary music programme, developed by the Methodist School of Music and taught by trained music teachers, is a niche in our curriculum.

The rich music appreciation curriculum engages children in learning singing, music and movement and music-making. Our teachers use various techniques to engage children with fun music activities to learn about elements of music, playing instruments, circle games, creative movements, dancing and listening to music. At K1 and K2 levels, the programme aims to develop the whole child with a musical and spiritual emphasis. The rich and unique music curriculum engages the whole Methodist approach to lay the foundation for godly character through holistic music education.

Aesthetics involves the creative expression of emotions and ideas. There are many opportunities for children to experiment with colours, lines, shapes, and textures to express themselves creatively and develop a creative imagination and an appreciation of the arts. They will create individual art creations, as well as work in group art projects that promote collaboration and teamwork and, at the same time, stimulate and encourage creativity, exploration and innovation.

Discovery of the World

Discovery of the World

We believe that children are natural explorers, ready to dive headfirst into the wonders of the world. Our passionate teachers are dedicated to fostering their curiosity and empowering them to discover and interact with their surroundings, whether it is their home, school, community, or beyond. Through hands-on experiences and thought-provoking discussions, children will gain a deep understanding of the world around them. Our inquiry-based approach nurtures their logical and thinking skills, encouraging them to ask questions, make observations, and draw meaningful conclusions. From predicting outcomes to conducting investigations – they will learn invaluable process skills that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Language & Literacy

Language & Literacy

Methodist preschools strongly emphasize children's language and literacy development and have carefully crafted a literacy programme for children to soar in! We seamlessly foster listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through the whole language learning approach. Our passionate educators act as language models, nurturing children's love for language in a supportive and enriching environment.

Phonological awareness supports children in becoming independent, fluent readers. They learn to blend sounds to read new words independently and decode the sounds to spell and write. Stories from various genres, rhymes, songs, language activities and drama are weaved into lessons to make the language meaningful and purposeful. During 'Show & Tell' sessions and class discussions, children confidently speak up and verbalize their feelings, ideas and thoughts.

We understand learning Chinese can be challenging for children! Traditional teaching methods often fail to engage young learners, making the learning process ineffective, and children feel disconnected from grasping and embracing this valuable language. Our curriculum is carefully curated to make learning Chinese fun and engaging. With daily lessons filled with captivating stories, songs, rhymes, creative thematic activities, and a cute-looking AI reading robot, Luka, we create an enjoyable and immersive environment that supports children's language development. Let children experience the joy of learning Chinese with Methodist preschools!

Health, Safety and Motor Skills
Development

Health, Safety and Motor Skills Development

Children are natural movers! Our teachers plan various physical activities to support the development of children's gross locomotor and fine motor skills. They also impact knowledge of good health habits to achieve healthy growth, the importance of safety and how to prevent danger at home, in school and public places, helping children grow in confidence and self-esteem to make safe and healthy choices and lead an active lifestyle in later life.

Every Methodist preschool features well-equipped facilities, e.g. playground, music room, gym room, cycling arena, sensory water and sand play areas, and resources to support children in developing their motor skills.

Numeracy

Numeracy

At Methodist preschools, our teachers teach numeracy concepts and skills in ways children can understand and apply meaningfully in their daily experiences. The hands-on learning approach effectively supports children in learning numeracy concepts and prepares them for a smooth transition to primary school.

Children explore and learn numeracy concepts and skills such as relationships and patterns, counting and number sense, shapes and spatial concepts, measurements and visual discrimination, addition and subtraction, time and value of money. Learning corners are thoughtfully designed with concrete objects, resources and activities to facilitate practice and reinforcement of concepts and skills taught.

In centres that adopted the innovative Singapore Preschool Math Curriculum programme, every lesson begins with a story and ends with problem-solving using specially designed manipulatives.

Our Educational Strategies

Integrate learning across different learning areas

Children will develop meaningful connections to understand the world they live in. They will share their interests and experiences with their peers and work collaboratively. As they participate in different learning situations, they learn to think, apply, translate and present their creative solutions.

Stimulate curiosity and creativity

Children will appreciate the diversity of views and experiment with a broad range of views without the anxiety of arriving at ‘correct’ answers. There will be tailoring of innovative programmes, excursions, field trips and enrichment programmes to expand their learning beyond the classroom.

Engage in play and self-directed learning

Children will explore their environment and engage in play and self-directed learning. They will build their confidence in formulating questions and constructing meaningful ideas about the world through the enjoyment of play, story-telling, open-ended activities, and projects.

Embed character development in the curriculum

Children will develop godly character in meaningful and healthy interactions. They will participate in values-in-action projects and support sustainability efforts to protect the planet for the future. Social responsibility, service to others and sportsmanship will be an integral part of their character development.
