Serangoon Garden Methodist Preschool Values In Action:

Marine Conservation Project

We embarked on our Start Small Dream Big project 2023 – Marine Conservation in collaboration with S.E.A. Aquarium (S.E.A.A) , one of the world’s largest aquariums, home to more than 100,000 marine animals representing 1,000 species across more than 40 diverse habitats.

We kick-started our project by discussing various conservation issues with our children through stories, interactive games about marine animals and ocean habitats. Children also learnt about how pollution and litter can harm marine animals and their habitats, and how we do our part to help. Our children learnt that we have a responsibility to take care of the planet, including the oceans and the creatures that live in them.

In collaboration with S.E.A.A., N2 – K2 children visited S.E.A.A. to have a close-up experience with marine animals and their habitats. S.E.A.A. also provided a platform for children to be ocean advocates to raise awareness against marine plastic pollution by sharing with their friends and families.

To wrap up our VIA project, our N2 – K2 children, together with their parents were involved in a litter-picking activity at the East Coast Park. – “ Let’s clean up the beach!”. Beach Clean-ups are opportunities for children to see firsthand on how our consumerist lives have led to an increasing amount of plastic waste ending up in our oceans. Children got connected with items they found (bottle caps, food packaging, drink bottles, straws etc.) and think about solution – at a personal, school or community level – to this problem.

Our aims were to raise awareness to keep the environment around us clean and healthy and relate it to the natural environment, which affects marine life. Parental support and involvement in the project provided home-school partnership in bringing home the message to our children the issues facing marine live and the role that everyone can play in marine conservation.
