Young Musicians’ Discovery Course

Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to imagination, and life to everything.

~ Greek philosopher and teacher Plato ~

Recognising the importance and numerable benefits of music for young children’s overall development, Methodist Preschool Services is pleased to partner with Methodist School of Music (MSM) to create a special enrichment class : YOUNG MUSICIANS’ DISCOVERY COURSE that is specially for kindergarteners aged 5-6 years old.

Course Objectives and Desired Outcomes

  • Discover

Discover your child’s interest, which will help parents consider one-on-one formal or informal lessons in an instrument, dance and singing.

  • Develop

Develop and heighten your child’s awareness of music, sound and movements.

Equip your child with foundational knowledge and skills in music and various musical instruments.

During mid-year and year-end performances, parents and guardians would be able to enjoy the fruits of their child’s musical progress.

  • Thrive

Music education supports the holistic development of young children in aspects of cognitive, emotional, social and physical domains. Music and movement may also help to improve children’s memory while developing learning and expression, which are essential life skills. We are confident and committed to ensure that students of our Young Musicians’ Discovery Course will thrive in a holistic environment, guided and nurtured by our experienced and dedicated music teachers.

Course Highlights

Music Rhythm & Theory

Learning to discern and follow music rhythm is an essential skill in our Young Musicians’  Discovery course. There are benefits to developing the ability to follow a rhythmic pattern. Sports engagement and many basic physical activities involve rhythm and follow a beat – such as crawling, walking, jumping, running, hopping, skipping, kicking, throwing, etc. Following instructions, maths, speech, reading and writing are all skills based in rhythm too, hence rhythm mastery is certainly a boon in children’s development both physically and cognitively,

Our course aims to equip children with basic music theory which is the ‘language’ of music. Learning music theory trains a child’s memory and lays a good foundation for a child to understand pitch and rhythm. It is also essential for melody composition which hones creativity.

Aural & Listening Techniques

Children will be taught listening skills and note recognition to help sharpen their ability to pitch correctly. The benefits of good listening skills go beyond music learning to improving a child’s focus in other undertakings, including academic learning .

Playing of various musical instruments

When children play handbells, keyboards, chime bars and other handheld percussion instruments, they are not only exposed to various musical instruments, but they may develop an inclination toward specific instruments. This would be useful for parents in their consideration of one-on-one lessons on the instrument, dance or singing, following the foundational music enrichment course at preschool level.

Rhythmic and Melodic Composition

One highlight of the course is students’ application of various building blocks gained through the weekly enrichment classes— to be able to handle basic rhythmic compositions first, then melodic compositions ! Rhythmic composition, no matter how simple, may inspire creativity and imagination. This may help boost the child’s self-esteem.

Parents / guardians can also look forward to students’ showcase of their child’s progress during mid-year and year-end. These platforms are important in helping students develop character values of discipline, perseverance, diligence, and resilience, as well as a sense of achievement and self-confidence gained through the concert preparation process.

General Music Appreciation

The teacher may use well-known musical pieces such as the the Carnival of the Animals by renowned French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, to help with the children’s imagination and ability to identify different sounds and movements.

Introducing young musicians to composers, songs, and styles from a variety of genres, such as classical and folk will help create more neural pathways and improve the child’s brain functioning as a result.
