Our Core Curriculum

In alignment with the Ministry of Education (MOE), our Methodist preschools ensure comprehensive coverage of the six learning domains for holistic development in accordance with the national Nurturing Early Learners (NEL) curriculum. The NEL Framework articulates MOE’s belief and principles on how children learn and develop, and what constitutes quality pre-school education. Our Methodist preschools offer a uniquely curated curriculum that extends beyond the key learning areas stipulated within the NEL framework. The focus areas of our comprehensive core curriculum ensure holistic development of our children, and they include :

  • Aesthetic and Creative Expression

  • Discovery of the World

  • Language and Literacy

  • Motor Skills Development

  • Numeracy and Social

  • Emotional Development

Language & Literacy

Language & Literacy

Methodist preschools place a strong emphasis on children’s language and literacy development.

Our teachers use the latest pedagogical approaches and strategies to build a firm literacy foundation for our children. They use the whole language learning approach to develop children’s listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. As language models, the teachers will facilitate and scaffold children’s love for the language in a conducive language and literate environment on  a daily basis.

Phonics is a component in our literacy programme to develop our children to be independent fluent readers. They will learn how to blend the sounds together to read new words, and decode the sounds to spell and write. Thematic stories from a variety of genres, rhymes, songs, language activities and drama are weaved into lessons to provide contextualization of concepts, hence making language meaningful and purposeful. Opportunities are also provided during 'Show and Tell' sessions and class discussions  for children to verbalize their feelings and thoughts to boost their confidence in oral expressions.

Chinese is the 2nd language in our curriculum. Our fun and interesting Chinese thematic integrated lessons make learning Chinese engaging and effective for children. There are daily lessons with captivating stories, songs, rhymes and creative language activities to support them in speaking, listening, comprehension, word recognition, reading and writing skills. As the children develop Chinese literacy interest, they are motivated to use the language as a means of communication, both spoken and written.

Numeracy

Numeracy

At Methodist preschools, play-based math experiences are conducted in a safe and trusting environment to help children become learners who see math learning as enjoyable.

Children will explore and learn many fundamental numeracy concepts such as counting and number value, matching and comparing, ordering, patterning and sequencing, shape and spatial awareness, simple measurements and visual discrimination, simple addition and subtraction, value of money and concept of time.

Learning corners are thoughtfully designed with concrete objects, resources and activities to facilitate practice of the numeracy concepts taught. Our hands-on learning approach makes numeracy learning effective in hone children’s thinking and understand the application of these concepts in real-life settings.

Aesthetic Programme
(Music & Art)

Aesthetic Programme (Music & Art)

A niche in our curriculum is our proprietary music programme developed by Methodist School of Music and taught by trained music teachers.

Our rich music appreciation curriculum engages children in learning singing, music and movement and music-making. They learn about elements of music, how to play musical instruments, appreciate culture through ethnic songs, and notation reading. The Methodist School of Music programme develops listening skills, proper breathing techniques, teamwork, and musicianship while enhancing memory, inspiring creativity and building self-confidence through self-expression in children.

Our preschools also promote creative imagination and the appreciation of arts in our children. Besides individual art creations, children are assigned group art projects to provide opportunities for collaboration and teamwork. Our children are exposed to various art mediums and techniques as well as the different elements of art. Creative expression through art and craft is highly encouraged at our preschools to stimulate and promote creativity, exploration and innovation.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Programme

STEM, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, is an educational discipline that aims to spark an interest and lifelong love of sciences for students to develop a strong foundation on the competencies needed to prepare our children for future-readiness.

The Luka AI Reading Robot and Bee Bot are among the first initiatives in educational technology that have been rolled out at some of our Methodist preschools, with more in store in line with our curriculum advancement to orientate our students toward future readiness in our Smart Nation and a highly digitalised world that they are part of.
